The BBC reported that Jersey in the UK is changing its inheritance laws to conform to the European Convention on Human Rights. Currently, a husband inherits all of his wife’s immovable property on death while the wife only inherits one-third of her husband’s immovable property. Immovable property includes land, the house and its fixtures.
Under the new law to go into effect by Christmas, both the husband and wife will claim dower or one-third of their spouse’s property.
